डोनान्ड ट्रंप ने फिर साबित किया है कि वे अजेय हैं। 24 फरवरी को ट्रंप ने प्रतिस्पर्धी निकी हैली के गृहराज्य साऊथ केरोलाइना में जीत हासिल की। साऊथ केरोलाइना की पूर्व गर्वनर होने के बावजूद हैली प्रायमरी में हार गईं। यह आयोवा, न्यू हैम्पशायर और नवादा के बाद ट्रंप की प्राइमरीज में चौथी जीत है। इन जीतों से साफ़ है कि रिपब्लिकन मतदाताओं पर ट्रंप की पकड़ काफी मज़बूत है। जबकि ट्रंप पर आपराधिक आरोपों में मुकदमे चल रहे हैं। उन्हें जुर्माने बतौर और ज़मानत के लिए दसियों लाख डालर भुगतान करने पड़े हैं।बावजूद इसके वे लगातार रिपब्लिकन पार्टी के पसंदीदा नेता बने हुए हैं। आखिर क्या कारण है कि राष्ट्रपति के रूप में नाकामियों, लोकतंत्र के लिए खतरा होने की हकीकत के बावजूद ट्रंप, रिपब्लिकन पार्टी की चहेते हैं?
यह एक मुनासिब सवाल है। और जवाब उनकी पार्टी में छिपा है। दरअसल रिपब्लिकन पार्टी ‘व्यक्तित्ववादी’ पार्टी बन गई है यानी कि पार्टी को कुछ लोग चला रहे हैं।वैसे यह स्थिति भारत सहित दुनिया में कई पार्टियों की है। जब पार्टी पर एक व्यक्ति का कब्जा हो जाता है तब विचारधारा और उसकी अभिव्यक्ति की भाषा – दोनों गौण हो जाते हैं। सन् 2015 में रिपब्लिकन पार्टी बहुत कमजोर स्थिति में थी। कई सालों से पार्टी में अंदरूनी झगड़े चल रहे थे, उसकी विचारधारा में स्पष्टता नहीं थी और नेताओं और समर्थकों के बीच की खाई चौड़ी होती हुई थी। ग्रेंड ओल्ड पार्टी (जीओपी) में नेतृत्व का अभाव था। पार्टी का चुनाव जीतने का फार्मूला नाकाम साबित हो चुका था। पुराने, मज़बूत नेताओं को प्राइमरीज में टी पार्टी (सन 2009 में टैक्स के अत्यधिक भार के खिलाफ अमरीका में शुरू हुआ आन्दोलन) के नौसीखियों के हाथों हार का सामना करना पड़ रहा था।
ऐसे में ट्रंप अचानक पार्टी पर नमूदार हुए। रिपब्लिकनों को उनमें एक ऐसा दमदार व्यक्ति मिला जो दुबारा पार्टी का बोलबाला कायम कर सकता था। इसके पहले ट्रंप का न तो राजनीति से कोई लेनादेना था और ना ही रिपब्लिकन पार्टी से।उनके किसी भी सत्ताधारी रिपब्लिकन नेता से निकट संबंध नहीं थे। फिर भी ट्रंप 2016 के चुनाव में रिपब्लिकन पार्टी के राष्ट्रपति पद का उम्मीदवार बनने में सफल रहे।
उनके विचार और उनका व्यक्तित्व इतना प्रभावशाली बना कि वे पार्टी के परंपरागत ढांचे को किनारे कर उसे अपने व्यक्तिगत राजनैतिक और आर्थिक हितों को आगे बढ़ाने का औजार बनाने में कामयाब हुए। वे रिपब्लिकनों के बॉस बन गए। वे उन पर दादागिरी करते थे, उन्हें अपमानित करते थे मगर फिर भी उन्हें कोई चुनौती नहीं देता था। पार्टी के नेता उन्हें झेलते रहे।
